Selling cars, working in a pharmaceutical warehouse or in computer information technology all sound like great jobs by today's standards, but the guys in Staynlis felt like God was calling them to something more. This calling is what fueled the drive for the new hard rock band Staynlis. God says to take up our cross and follow Him and Staynlis is determined to follow at all costs. That's why Staynlis is hitting the road, leaving their Kansas home and partnering with Creative Soul Records. Staynlis will be touring and promoting their self-titled debut EP. Staynlis is a source of guitar heavy melodic rock that speaks of the real struggles in the world today.
The roots of Staynlis are a fusion of many different types of music, but hard rock is definitely the strongest influence. Guitarist Wade Richard and bassist Merlin Shippy started the band at a time when they were looking for something more than what they had or were currently playing. For Richard the calling was clear, "I knew God was calling me to move on, and he put the elements in place. All I had to do was take the first step". For both Richard and Shippy, there had become a need to move beyond "projects" into a real working band.
After more than a year of struggle to fill each position, the band was finally complete with a thunderous percussive side and vocals that soared the band to a new level with it's melodic interpretations of the hard edged chords. The new guys gave the band a new sound and a new purpose. The band found itself attracting new audiences from all over the country.
So what about the name? They are all guys and what do guys like? Cars of course. Creating a list of car related names that can be tied to Christ sounds tough but it took a very short time and Staynlis was created. The name Staynlis was chosen because of Christ's sacrifice on the cross and His blood that was shed. Because of that sacrifice, we are forgiven and Staynlis in His eyes.
For each member there is a time that can be recalled of playing in bars under a cloud of cigarette smoke, dim lights and alcohol drenched floors, and each was ready for a change. Ryan recalls his own calling, "I had been praying for God to lead me to find Christian musicians to write and perform songs with that would bring others to Christ through the music".
It's focus made clear, Staynlis resolved to be bold and straight forward about truth and captured the trials and failures of their past in their music. The songs are a combination of each member's experiences and struggle in their daily walk with God. A common theme on the EP is that of crying out to God. This cannot be more evident than in the song, "Too Much". "We all get to points in our lives where we need to give up and give everything to Christ and say I can't do it on my own anymore", Richard said.
Staynlis agreed that they would not water down their message and agreed to be as straight forward with God's message as possible. The group has also agreed to remain "approachable" instead of scaring people away by their notoriety. "We are simply out to break down barriers and reach those that can't be reached by any other medium" Shippy said.
Staynlis wants to give God and Christian music a different image. They want an image of edgy in your face rock with a Christ centered message. This is a message that is definitely being heard.
Mission Statement:
Staynlis desires to reach those that are seeking, those that have been hurt and those that are without hope. Our tool for this desire is our music. Our hope is that we can break down generational barriers and reach those that can't be reached by any other medium. Our music speaks of our trials, our errors and our successes in our relationship with our Savior, and our hope is that it moves hearts into a relationship with Him. Our plan is to accomplish this by being obedient to God's plans for our lives and His use of our music as He works through us.
